I recently invested in a new laser, it is a Scupfun S30 10W.
My old laser is a hoky coky (no name brand) 2.5W and has served me well for engraving general artwork plus branding my other wood work pieces but it was not powerful enough to cut pieces (unless I set it to do about a million passes!).
The Sculpfun has good reviews and it has not dissapointed. It happily cuts 3mm plywood in a single pass and with multiple passes I have cut 6mm oak.
There is a photo of the laser itself at the top of the page. I made an enclosure for it with ventilation to save filling the workshop with smoke.
My first projects were some bespoke boxes for my wood stains. These were made using box patterns dowloaded from boxes.py (https://boxes.hackerspace-bamberg.de/?language=en) and then modified to accept my bottles.
After making these I trawled the Internet for other ideas and came across designerbundles.net where there are thousands of designs to download for commercial use.
