Bowl Wall Thickness!

The world renowned wood turner and author Richard Raffan challenges turners to cut the occasional bowl in half! This advice is to let the turner properly see just how well they have achieved an even wall thickness.

It’s a double edged challenge as there is the stated intent, to check the wall thickness, but also the “trauma” of cutting in two a perfectly good bowl (in fact the more perfect the better!).

So, here , at the top of the page, is a small bowl that I turned and then cut in half. I’m quite pleased with it actually. I’ve managed to get a pretty thin wall at approximately 2mm and it is fairly even. It’s a bit thicker at the bottom but that is generally regarded as best practice.

Overall then a good result. Shame it’s cut in two!
