Owl Intarsia Shaping (part 3)

Yay, I’m finally on to the shaping.

I did have a bit of a set back by slipping on my backside while walking Oscar, jolting my shoulder quite badly. I thought it would get better on its own, but a fortnight later had to give in and go to the doctors!

Anyway… I’ve had a steroid injection in my shoulder and now I’m raring to go. Well maybe not quite raring, but steady away 😉.

I do the initial shaping with a foam sanding drum mounted in the lathe. This establishes the shaping of each piece.

Once the overall shape is established I move over to a flap wheel mounted on a bench grinder to round and smooth the edges.

Then it is a case of rinse, repeat, gluing each pice to the last as the assembly continues.

Looking at the photo above, I suppose I should mention that the owls head was also carved first to get the nose shaping.
