I added a 10W Sculpfun laser to my machine list last August and was blown away at how much better it was than my old 2.5W laser, which I have had for many years.
The 2.5W laser was fine for engraving but wasn’t really man enough for cutting. The 10W Sculpfun did a grand job pf cutting 3mm plywood and I made several Christmas lanterns, tea light houses etc. As these things tend to go, my initial joy at its cutting capabilities started to subside in the face of it’s limitations in terms of material thickness and speed.
Ha ha, never satisfied!!!
I was hankering after a more powerful laser but the difference in price was enormous – c£250 for the 10W laser vs c£1500 for a 40W laser. I fancied one, but not that much!
T’other day an advert popped up on Facebook for discount sales at Creality. They were offering the Falcon2 40W laser for £529, normal price £1519. £529 is still a fair bit of money for a hobby, but I just couldn’t ignore that sort of discount. So I bought one!
Oh my! It’s the dog’s doo dahs! 3mm projects that were taking hours it blasts though in minutes. Also it can cut much thicker material. They say up to 19mm pine but I’ve not tried that yet.
I have made a box out of 6mm Oak, which I could not sensibly cut with the 10W. To be fair I did try it on the 10W and it could actually cut it but it required about 5 passes cutting at about 100mm/min. the 40W laser does it in one pass cutting at 800mm/min.
Here is the oak box with a birch inlay.
For anyone interested in the Creality Falcon they are still on offer at – https://uk.crealityfalcon.com/collections/falcon2-engraver.
